Summary

In The Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben shares his deep love of woods and forests and explains the amazing processes of life, death, and regeneration he has observed in the woodland and the amazing scientific processes behind the wonders of which we are blissfully unaware。 Much like human families, tree parents live together with their children, communicate with them, and support them as they grow, sharing nutrients with those who are sick or struggling and creating an ecosystem that mitigates the impact of extremes of heat and cold for the whole group。 As a result of such interactions, trees in a family or community are protected and can live to be very old。 In contrast, solitary trees, like street kids, have a tough time of it and in most cases die much earlier than those in a group。

Drawing on groundbreaking new discoveries, Wohlleben presents the science behind the secret and previously unknown life of trees and their communication abilities; he describes how these discoveries have informed his own practices in the forest around him。 As he says, a happy forest is a healthy forest, and he believes that eco-friendly practices not only are economically sustainable but also benefit the health of our planet and the mental and physical health of all who live on Earth。

Really informative but also very approachable。 A true 'for a general audience' science book, which can be hard to find。 I also appreciated that the information is broken up into fairly short chapters because it made it easy to consume in bite-size chunks。 Really informative but also very approachable。 A true 'for a general audience' science book, which can be hard to find。 I also appreciated that the information is broken up into fairly short chapters because it made it easy to consume in bite-size chunks。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book even though it was a bit heavy on facts, and I wasn’t sure if everything was evidence-based。 The voice of Mike Grady in the audiobook was very soothing。 I think I enjoyed the voice of the narrator more than the actual content of the book。

Anthropomorphising trees is dangerous。 I now want to either set my plants free into the wild or collect more so they don’t feel so lonely。 Lovely little book which helps you to understand how the world is connected and our environment is alive, human intervention has been detrimental to this ‘wood wide web’ but we can fix the problems we have caused and help the forests to thrive。 And maybe learn something about relationships along the way。

As the daughter of a logger, I always love reading about trees。 Trees have always fascinated me, but over the years the discourse between the timber industry and conservationists has torn me into several directions。 In Oregon (and the rest of the Pacific Northwest), the forests are suffering from the over-logging one on hand and over-conservation on the other, and the increasingly dry and hot summers are bringing these different practices to horrifying consequences。Anywho。 This is a book about t As the daughter of a logger, I always love reading about trees。 Trees have always fascinated me, but over the years the discourse between the timber industry and conservationists has torn me into several directions。 In Oregon (and the rest of the Pacific Northwest), the forests are suffering from the over-logging one on hand and over-conservation on the other, and the increasingly dry and hot summers are bringing these different practices to horrifying consequences。Anywho。 This is a book about the forests of Germany, but also tie into the forests of the world and in similar climates, with an emphasis on taking no more than you need, of honoring the entire ecosystem and recognizing that the forest you see is a snap shot in time, that it is in a constant state of flux and communication, both of which are barely observable to impatient and short-lived human eyes。This book makes me yearn to step into the forest, take a walk, and search for the old growth sections of the world。 。。。more

Just wasn’t for me。 I was hoping for a book with more empirical information but instead I got a book that seemed like the same information was repeated in a handful of ways。

Read this book! I will never look at trees the same way again。This book took me a while to read because it required real processing。 A fascinating and engaging discussion about the hidden life of a beautiful part of our world。 If you were in any doubt how special trees are, this book will remove it。

This book will change the way you think about trees forever。 It’s written in a very simple way easing anyoe into understanding all the concepts and terms of forestry。The Hidden Life of Trees is the first of the Mystery of Nature Series, which in my opinion is generally a very insightful book about all the hidden wonders of trees。 I love that it is research-based and it gets you wondering about all the creatures we are used to seeing but never really know anything about。 It took me forever to rea This book will change the way you think about trees forever。 It’s written in a very simple way easing anyoe into understanding all the concepts and terms of forestry。The Hidden Life of Trees is the first of the Mystery of Nature Series, which in my opinion is generally a very insightful book about all the hidden wonders of trees。 I love that it is research-based and it gets you wondering about all the creatures we are used to seeing but never really know anything about。 It took me forever to read because I didn’t want to skim through all the details and I wanted enough time to absorb each piece of information I learned。 I’d definitely read the next book of the series soon。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

i've got a degree in naturalist biology, but I still learned quite a lot from this book。 And it doesn't feel like a textbook at all。 Very readable。 i've got a degree in naturalist biology, but I still learned quite a lot from this book。 And it doesn't feel like a textbook at all。 Very readable。 。。。more

This book was such an interesting investigation into the life of a forest。 Wohlleben's writing makes this scientific study feel absolutely enchanting。 This book was such an interesting investigation into the life of a forest。 Wohlleben's writing makes this scientific study feel absolutely enchanting。 。。。more

I really wanted to LOVE this book, but no。。 At first, I thought that the prose was the fault of the translation, but there’s something more conversational and anecdotal about it in many ways。 While it touches on so many ideas that are legitimate and interesting, some ideas don’t have a reliable research backing them up。 The author often gives sweeping statements that I don’t think are necessarily correct。

When is a tree more than a tree? When you read and understand this book about the hidden life of trees!

Tina

Clearly and simply written。 A good general interest science lite book。

Beatriz

Honestly was surprised by how easy a read this was。 I think it is very important to have scientific books that the ever day person can read。 I also am amazed at the complex life of trees。 I have a completely changed perspective on trees now。

Johnny

Fascinating, intensive explanation of the intelligence of trees and the communication that occurs within forest communities。

Wendy Nolan

Mind blown! 🤯

Steve Sargent

What a great read。 Thoroughly enjoyed Wohllenben’s pointing insight on trees, reminding us that they are living creatures rather than objects, and how (as living creatures) they proliferate, migrate, and adapt。 I also appreciated his use of language, borrowing human characteristics to describe trees (mothering, offspring, skin, hurt, etc)。

Claire Hunter

Recommended to me by my therapist, fell in love with it。 A concise treatise on the equally complex and simplistic relationships between trees and how they operate as an ecological community told in a captivating and loving manner。

Kathryn McReynolds

Loved this book and learned so much about how trees can literally remove hard metals and oil spills。 They communicate and prevent diseases。 They release pheromones to warn nearby trees of insects! I mean… there’s so much more to learn about the wonders of trees!

Jozef Michalovčik

I dont read much of these books。 I dont even know how to call them。 Gamer lies somewhere between the biology textbook , novel and biography of forest ranger? But it was very interesting change and you can learn a lot of new things about such an important part of our lifes - forests, trees, plants and nature in general。

Elazar

Fascinating information about a world about which we know very little。

Valerie

Allee Koestner

Just an easy to read book filled with fun facts about trees。
